Tie Ying was born in Harbin, China in 1971. His work ruminates on the tranquility of everyday life and romanticizes the mundane. Tie studied oil painting at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and graduated in 1992. Beginning in 1996, as a visiting scholar, Tie studied at the Royal University of Fine Art in Stockholm, Sweden, where he began experimentations with photography, which is now his primary medium. After two years in Stockholm, the artist returned to Beijing, where he began developing his style, acting as an encyclopedic documentarian of Chinese society.

Tie’s works are widely collected in China and internationally, including the DSL Collection, the Prince Albert II Collection, and other reputable private and public collections.

Tie has held solo exhibitions at the Boers-Li Gallery Beijing, China (2017); Element Art Space, Singapore (2011); +1 Space, Beijing, China (2011); May 36 Gallery, Zurich (2009); Marlborough Chelsea, New York (2005); and Mejan Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden (1997). Group exhibitions have included the Hongkun Museum, Beijing, China (2014); 4 Face Space Gallery, Beijing, China (2014); and Aura Gallery, Shanghai, China (2003). The artist has participated in art fairs such as Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland (2011) and The International Asian Art Fair in New York (2007, 2006).
