About

Helmut Newton (1920-2004) was a German-Australian fashion photographer, renowned for his provocative, erotically charged black-and-white photos. Born in Berlin, Newton fled Nazi Germany in 1938, eventually settling in Australia where he began his career as a photographer. His work often featured high-contrast lighting, bold compositions, and a voyeuristic yet sophisticated approach to the female form, which challenged traditional notions of beauty and sexuality.

Newton's iconic images graced the pages of prestigious fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, as well as numerous international exhibitions and galleries. His distinctive style and fearless exploration of fetishism, power dynamics, and gender roles have left an indelible mark on the world of fashion photography, making him one of the most influential and controversial photographers of the 20th century.

Newton's work has has been exhibited worldwide and featured in magazines and numerous mongraphs. The preservation and presentation of his work is managed by the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, which was established in 2003.
